The One Shift That Got More Views Than Their Last 10 Videos

Hey,

A few months ago, someone jumped on one of my free 15-minute calls and said,

"Jamie, I've been posting for two years and nothing's happening. What am I doing wrong?"

I looked at their channel and within ten seconds I had the answer. But it wasn't what they expected.

Fast-forward a couple of weeks and they messaged me saying "I changed one thing and my last video got more views than my last ten combined."

Today I want to share the one shift that changed everything for them, and for dozens of channels I've worked on, so you can stop blending in and start being the obvious choice in your niche.

How to stop being invisible

Most education channels I see on calls are doing everything "right." by posting weekly, have decent production and solid ideas/topics.

But they're sitting in the worst possible place where they and their channel look vague. They have a vague channel, vague promise, vague viewer and the result (as I'm sure you've guessed by now) is vague views from vague people who will never buy.

They think the problem is content quality when it almost never is.

Honestly I've seen so many incredible, smart, valuable people not grow on YouTube because they've not fixed this and once they do the explode.

The problem is that they're good in their niche instead of owning their niche. And that gap is where all the growth, all the authority, and all the money lives.

What the difference actually looks like

When you're "good in a niche," you're roughly interchangeable with three or four other channels. If you disappeared tomorrow, your audience would find a replacement within a week.

A quick test to see how you stand out is to look at how people describe you.

If people describe you by topic: "Oh yeah, he's a sales coach" or "She makes videos about productivity." then that's not good news haha.

When you own the niche, comparison disappears as people don't weigh you against alternatives because your angle, your mechanism, your specificity is so tight that there IS no direct comparison. They're choosing between you and nothing.

I saw this firsthand working with Ali Abdaal on 50+ videos. Ali didn't start by trying to own "productivity." He started by owning productivity for Cambridge medical students. Then medical students broadly. Then university students. Then knowledge workers. He expanded only after dominating each smaller version first.

And Ali always said something that stuck with me, he'd say often "I don't want to be a guru. I want to be a guide." He only wanted to be one or two chapters ahead of his audience and I actually think this is part of why he struggles for views now because he's actually ended up being the guru too far away from his audience's problems.

But, when he was smaller around 2020-2022, he didn't think he could claim the productivity crown. But through years of consistency and specificity, the audience decided he was the niche leader, whether he thought so or not.

Why fixing this matters more than having "better content"

When your positioning is sharp, your viewer can answer two questions in under three seconds when they land on your channel:

  1. "Is this for me?"
  2. "What do I get here, specifically?"

If the answer isn't obvious, they bounce. The algorithm learns nothing useful about who to send you and it treats you like a random channel, not a category leader.

But when you commit to one sharp positioning choice, every future video, title, and thumbnail starts compounding instead of resetting. That's the difference between pushing a boulder uphill and rolling it downhill.

I have an entire video here where an old client of mine on the very first video of figuring out their positioning got them a viral video which is now about to cross 10M views.

If you want watch me break down that strategy you can do so here:

So if you want to stop being one of many and start being the only option for your specific viewer, stop trying to be "generally good." and get specifically undeniable for one type of person.

Until next week,

Jamie

P.S. In a few weeks I'm opening a new program I'm working hard on, it's the step-by-step system for expert YouTubers who want to own their niche, get more outlier videos and monetise their audience.
